PROFILES

Candidate Profile

This program is aimed at civil engineers and engineers in other related fields whose undergraduate education is equivalent to that of the academic program in force of Universidad Nacional de Colombia

Candidates for the Master's Degree in Engineering - Structures program require a minimum basic training in this area that includes the following topics: Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Structural Analysis, Building Materials, Design of Concrete Structures and Design of Metal Structures. The applicant is also expected to have taken common subjects in construction, soil mechanics and foundations. As a consequence of the above, the potential candidates will have to be Civil Engineers and eventually if they are of a related undergraduated program they will have to carry out the corresponding levelling.

Graduate Profile

The Magister Program will promote the deepening development of knowledge and the development of the student’s research capacity in the specific field of Structural Engineering.

OBJECTIVES

Master’s Degree in Engineering - Structures of Universidad de Colombia has as its general objective the training in the analysis and design of structures, and in the research that sustains them, including the study of the relevant properties of building materials. The fundamental aim of Structural Engineering is to design structures that fulfil their function in a safe, an aesthetic and an economical manner. The Master's Degree in Engineering - Structures has two different curricula: research and in depth-study. These curricula lead to the same title, as established in the Agreement 033 of 2007 of the Higher University Council.

The specific training objectives of the Research curriculum are:

  • To train students in analysis and design of structures, and in the research that supports them, including the study of the relevant properties of building materials.
  • To development of methodologies, procedures or new knowledge focused on the development of knowledge in analysis and design of structures, as well as the materials that compose them.
  • To train for research, scientific, academic and professional performance specialized in the field of Structural Engineering.
  • To generate knowledge to verify those that are already part of human knowledge and activities, as well as to create and adapt structural technologies to provide solutions to society’s problems.
  • To contribute to the improvement of academic quality at the National University of Colombia and respond to the requirements of the progress of science and the social needs of the country.
  • To propose alternatives for technological, economic and social change, while generating feedback mechanisms that allow the production of knowledge to be related to the demands of knowledge.

The specific training objectives of the Deepening curriculum are:

  • To train students in the analysis and design of structures and in the research that supports them including the study of the relevant properties of building materials.
  • To train professionals who are able to deepen and apply the knowledge and tools acquired for giving solutions to particular problems in the field of design and structural analysis.
  • To train for the development of the research activity applied to the professional performance specialized in the Structural Engineering field.
  • To create and adapt technologies to provide solutions to society’s problems.
  • To contribute to the improvement of academic quality in Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
