PROFILES

Candidate Profile

The program is aimed at professionals in life sciences, engineering or mathematics with interest in developing interdisciplinary research projects to solve problems of biological interest using and developing knowledge of computer sciences.

Graduate Profile

The Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics from Universidad Nacional de Colombia educates professionals who will have the ability to engage in interdisciplinary research teams in life sciences. They will be able to use and develop bioinformatics tools to identify, organize and analyse data from high-performance experiments aimed at solving life sciences problems. They will have the conceptual bases necessary to formulate computational approaches to diverse biological phenomena and provide innovative knowledge and products to the Colombian scientific community.

OBJECTIVES

The overall objective of the program is:

To develop in students the capacity to formulate interdisciplinary approaches to the study, analysis and modeling of biological phenomena through creative solutions to problems in the different areas of bioinformatics.

The specific learning outcomes of the Research curriculum are:

  • To educate researchers who integrate knowledge in life sciences and engineering to design research projects aimed at solving life sciences problems.
  • To educate researchers in the use of bioinformatics techniques and methodologies to organize and analyze data of biological interest.
  • To generate interdisciplinary groups to address high impact research programs in the life sciences.
  • To support the different research groups of the university, which use or develop bioinformatics tools.
  • To strengthen the scientific community in bioinformatics to develop a critical mass of researchers in the country to promote this area of knowledge.

The specific learning outcomes of the In-Depth curriculum are:

  • To educate researchers who integrate knowledge in life sciences and engineering to design research projects aimed at solving life sciences problems.
  • To educate researchers in the use of bioinformatics techniques and methodologies to organize and analyze data of biological interest.
  • To educate interdisciplinary groups to address high impact research programs in the life sciences.
  • To support the different research groups of the university, which use or develop bioinformatics tools.

CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

RESEARCH

Research curriculum: The main objective of training is for students to acquire the skills and knowledge that allow them to participate in knowledge generation processes or technological processes, which can be applied in problem solving.

In this way, subjects and academic activities are taught that allow them to develop a Master’s thesis (written dissertation), which lasts for 2 semesters, which is equivalent to 22 credits, that is, 1056 working hours. Generally, the subject of the master's thesis could be deepened in the doctorate.

IN-DEPTH STUDY

In-Depth Curriculum: Also known as Professional Master, the main objective is for students to acquire skills and knowledge specific to the profession, which can be applied in the resolution of concrete problems, the study of cases, or the analysis of particular situations of a disciplinary or interdisciplinary nature that should not necessarily lead to a process of generating new knowledge.

In this way, courses and academic activities are taken in this curriculum that allow the construction and preparation of a Final Work, in which methods, scientific and technological developments already existing in the resolution of a specific problem are applied. The final work lasts for one semester, equivalent to 10 credits, or 480 working hours.

For this modality, in accordance with Article 3 of Agreement 040 of 2017, the Postgraduate Curriculum Advisory Committee has defined as the final working modality only the Final Work Project.
