Mission

Promote education of researchers at doctoral level, who stand out for their critical and rational appropriation of solid scientific and technological knowledge in the different areas of Civil Engineering, capable of leading innovation processes, generation, application and dissemination of knowledge, thus contributing to the autonomous and integral development of the country, in the public and private environments.

Vision

In a horizon of 10 years the Doctorate program in Engineering - Civil Engineering of the National University of Colombia will be recognized for the excellent training of its graduates, for the high level of its technological infrastructure and for its capacity to generate new knowledge reflected in a wide production of scientific material and technological innovation, for the continuous interaction with academic networks worldwide, and its impact on the country’s development.

Objectives

Overall Learning Outcome

To educate Doctors in Engineering - Civil Engineering capable of proposing, guiding and carrying out with scientific and technical rigor, original and autonomous research, through the development of a research dissertation that strengthens the basic and applied scientific advance, to generate technological, social and economic development in a region or country. Accordingly, new knowledge should be recognized as such by peer researchers.

The specific learning outcomes of the curriculum are:

To educate researchers and professors to enrich research groups and contribute to the country’s academic and research improvement in the field of Civil Engineering.
To promote the production of knowledge and basic and applied research in the areas of Engineering that make up the Doctorate in Civil Engineering.
To promote multidisciplinary work and the integration of research developed in the five areas of the Doctorate in Civil Engineering program.
To support the formulation of policies, norms and regulations by governmental entities, supported by knowledge acquired through the research developed in the program.
To increase the participation of the National University in national and international research networks that allow the exchange of experiences, technical and research cooperation and the mobility of national and foreign students and teachers.

Strategies

In order to achieve the objectives set, the following strategies of the curriculum are presented:

To motivate the participation of students and graduates of the levels of training in undergraduate, specialization and master, to continue their training process in the doctoral program.
To encourage the creation of research spaces for the development of doctoral theses, directed by professors linked to the Department in the different areas of Civil Engineering.
To facilitate the interaction of the doctoral programme with other academic programmes of the National University of Colombia, at its different headquarters, and with other national and foreign academic institutions, by developing cooperation projects to integrate knowledge and technological trends.
To promote the development of agreements with public and private sector institutions to link scientific research with the solution of problems of common interest.
To prepare and submit research proposals to entities involved in the financing of scientific projects.
To promote the application of knowledge in local and regional problems, taking into account the particular characteristics of the country. Promote the critical analysis, with academic peers, of the results of the research developed and disseminate them through the different types of scientific publication of the highest level (ISI indexed journals and world-class congresses).

Candidates for the Doctoral Program must meet the following characteristics:

Hold the title of Civil Engineer and demonstrate academic excellence and research experience. The advisory committee of the Doctorate in Civil Engineering program may admit professionals with different degrees, provided that they demonstrate basic knowledge and research experience corresponding to the chosen line of research.
Demonstrate skills to formulate and develop research projects in the research areas of the program with complete autonomy.
Have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary way as a researcher in university institutions, research institutes, industries or companies.
Show ability to identify and solve Civil Engineering problems using high levels of theoretical and technological knowledge.

Graduates of the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering of the National University in Bogota will be able to:

From the occupational point of view, the graduate may work as a teacher and researcher in public or private higher education institutions. Likewise, it may be linked as a technical-scientific in public entities such as Autonomous Corporations, decentralized Institutes such as IDEAM or the Geological Service, as well as governmental entities such as Ministries or Secretaries.

It is expected that the program will have an impact on the labor market of Consulting in Civil Engineering, increasing the quality of it, with the insertion of new techniques and developments in the design and engineering studies of our country and our neighbors.

Doctoral studies require full-time study. The subjects can be taken in any of the plans offered by the University or can also be directed courses. The Agreement 20 of 2014 of the Faculty of Engineering Council of the Bogotá Headquarters, defines the lines of research and the courses associated directly to the plan.

RESEARCH

Research Lines

Water and Environmental Engineering.

Objective

This line will contribute to the analysis from the engineering point of view, of the problem of water resources and their relationship with the environment. These topics include aspects of fluid mechanics and experimental and computational hydraulics, hydrology and hydrogeology, mathematical and physical modelling in river engineering, pollution and treatment of aquatic environments. From the environmental point of view, topics related to the environmental impact of construction, waste management and sustainability in construction are addressed. It is also planned to study topics in environmental management; coastal sanitation; environmental policy, information and management; and comprehensive risk assessment.

Grounds

The United Nations (UN) has proposed a number of strategies and actions to meet the Millennium Development Goals [3]. One of these objectives is to ensure environmental sustainability. To measure the achievement of this goal at the global level, the UN proposed the following goals: integrating the principles of sustainable development into each country’s policies and programmes; reducing the loss of environmental resources and biodiversity; halving, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation; and by 2020, significantly improve the living conditions of at least 100 million people in the poverty belts of large cities.

In the "Bases of the National Development Plan 2010-2014" [4], the environmental management of water resources in our country was established as a crucial aspect. Although our country has an average water yield of 63 L/s-km2 [[i]], six times higher than the world average, it is estimated that 40% of the country’s main watersheds are vulnerable to deterioration. In general, these basins are affected by high population growth and pollution levels. In our country, the deterioration of the river basins represents approximately losses equivalent to 3.7% of GDP [4]. The objective of the current environmental policy in Colombia is to ensure the recovery and maintenance of natural capital and its ecosystem services, as a support for economic growth [4].

Water and the environment have been identified by the National University of Colombia as a topic in which to develop interdisciplinary programs and institutional projects of research, innovation, and technological development with high impact for the country. In this regard, the following agendas related to water and the environment were identified in the Knowledge Agendas project [7]: environment and biodiversity; and habitat, city and territory. The University has proposed "to consolidate tools to facilitate in the next five years the knowledge, conservation, valuation, and sustainability of ecosystems and their human settlements, in order to influence public policies to improve the quality of life of Colombians" [7]. The following needs were identified as challenges and perspectives in the local and national environment: policy identification for risk prevention and management; analysis of climate change impacts and their incorporation into planning processes; study of the effects of pollution on human health; evaluation of environmental services in terms of the conservation of water resources; and understanding of the relationship between society, space and nature.

In relation to environmental issues and water, the research of the Department of Civil and Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, is articulated through the Postgraduate Program Master in Engineering - Hydraulic Resources (MIRH) and three research groups endorsed by COLCIENCIAS: resilience and sanitation research group (RESA, classification C); environmental policy, information and management (PIGA, classification D); and water engineering research group (GIREH, classification B). The knowledge generated has been published in national journals such as Ingeniería e Investigación, Avances en Recursos Hidráulicos, Revista Colombiana de Geografía; and international journals such as Water Resources Research, Environmental Fluid Mechanics, and Journal of Environmental Engineering - ASCE. A complete list of the production of the groups (scientific articles, master’s thesis, articles in seminars and congresses, and technical reports) can be found in the annexes of this document. The following are thematic areas where GIREH, RESA, and PIGA groups have contributed to the generation and appropriation of knowledge: methodologies for estimating runoff and sources of pollution in basins; hydrology of tropical ecosystems; assessment of the hydrological impacts of the Child phenomenon and climate change; methodologies for estimating supply, water demand and water quality; methodologies and tools for the design, management, operation and control of floods and water pollution; studies of infrastructure, methodologies and tools for the integration of the sewage system - sewage plant - river; studies of hydrological processes, physico-chemical and biological in man-made and natural wetlands for flood control of urban water pollution; studies of river hydraulics, hydraulic structures, and water quality in rivers; analysis of surface and underground water resources; methodologies for the optimised management and control of pipelines, aqueducts and sewerage networks; hydrodynamic and water quality modelling in lakes, swamps and reservoirs; management, information, monitoring and environmental assessment; water purification; solid waste and leachate; environmental fate of pollutants and emerging pollutants; and wastewater treatment and re-use.

Structural Systems and Construction Materials.

Objective

This line of research aims to investigate in the areas of structural analysis and design, solid mechanics and structures, materials for structures and construction. This line seeks the development of advanced knowledge regarding the constitution, behavior and applications of the structural systems and the materials that compose it; the study and adaptation to the national reality of new materials and their technologies; development of analytical, numerical and physical modeling methods as well as computational solid mechanics.

Grounds

To meet basic needs such as housing, health, education and communication, society, and in particular our country, requires the construction of buildings, bridges, tunnels, containment and drainage structures. Such works must be the result of a structural, hydraulic, geotechnical and architectural analysis and design that ensures their strength, stability, functionality and economy. Therefore it is important to have a line research in structural systems and building materials that looks for methods of analysis more approximate to the real behavior of the structures and study the characteristics of the materials used, within the framework of a doctoral training programme in Civil Engineering.

Since 2000 the GIES research group of the National University of Colombia has contributed to the development in the field of structural systems and building materials. In some projects carried out by the group the causes of the collapse of some bridges of the Colombian road network were analyzed, structurally different types of connections in steel buildings were described, studied the mechanical behaviour of the bamboo and evaluated the different construction systems with this material. The results of such research are reflected in the publication of articles in journals, books and technical standards.

Geotechnics and Geo-environmental Risks.

Objective

The purpose of this line is to carry out research on the constituent relationships of soils, rocks and related materials on modelling and analysis of geotechnical problems and on the evaluation of natural risks associated with the geotechnical environment. This type of research is based on a strong laboratory support of computational and fieldwork systems and are fundamental to applying on multiple fronts of development and sustainability required by the country in topics such as foundations in complex conditions, slope stability, the construction and maintenance of road and transport infrastructure, the analysis of underground works, the design and improvement of pavements and new materials and the geotechnical zoning of the territory.

Grounds

Autonomous and high-level research is a basic need for the development of any country because conventional methods of dealing with problems may be inadequate or inappropriate when land use requirements are becoming more demanding because of high demand, this means that areas which were not previously covered should be used, that cities should be densified and that new housing, new roads, new mass transport systems should be built, which requires the use of new building materials, to generate large-scale industrial and mining projects. This requires that professionals with the capacity to understand the problems be trained and that they be able to systematically investigate the different aspects that derive from it.

In addition to the above-mentioned development processes, the world is currently facing the problem of climate change and this, as seen with the recent La Niña phenomenon, which has affected most of the Colombian territory, causes very significant impacts, which generate risks and losses to the population and infrastructure. Therefore, geotechnical research also plays a key role in understanding natural hazards and in reducing vulnerability to such frequent processes as landslides, torrential floods or flood protection systems.

Based on the policies of the National Development Plan, the design, construction and conservation aspects of major underground projects such as the Bogota metro or the Line tunnel are current challenges, the mining projects on which a large part of the economic budget for the coming years is based, the development of double-carriageway projects such as La Ruta del Sol, the country’s rail and port development and territorial reorganisation, making relevant the high-level studies that arise in this line of research.

The current Doctorate in Engineering-Geotechnics has allowed the development of research in mudstone and in residual soils, two types of materials very abundant in the country, which require additional studies to understand aspects of behavior such as stress-deformation-time characteristics, degradation processes, or effect of wetting and drying cycles. In addition, research is under way on wave propagation in rock masses and on the geomechanical behaviour of alluvial materials. The Geotechnical section has five full-time or full-time professors with doctoral training who can provide support in the direction of research, In addition there is a professor of chair who has been directing doctoral theses in geotechnics and two more professors are in the course of their doctoral training. Also the section has laboratory equipment, field and specialized software that allows the development of research at doctoral level. It is foreseeable that once the Doctorate in Engineering - Civil Engineering is structured, the current Doctorate in Engineering - Geotechnical will be incorporated, immediately transferring all students to the new program.

Transport Planning and Infrastructure.

Objective

The objective of this line is the development and implementation of road infrastructure management systems, both at the rural and urban levels. Such a system includes a coordinated set of activities related to road infrastructure planning, computational modelling, design, construction, conservation, evaluation and research.

Grounds

According to the documents of the National Policy and specifically the document Conpes 3167 [[i], [ii]], the national urban transport policy consists of strengthening the cities in the planning, management, regulation and control of traffic and transport.

Part of the initiatives of this policy seeks to encourage cities and urban centres to promote the development of infrastructures for the implementation of transport systems that meet the mobility needs of the population, under criteria of operational, economic and environmental efficiency.

Depending on the size of the population centre, the expansion of the capacity of the available infrastructure is sought on the one hand and on the other the optimization of the existing capacity, as well as the implementation of operational solutions with lower cost and high impact on transport.

In this regard, the transport line seeks to encourage the development and implementation of road infrastructure management systems, both at the rural and urban levels. This involves, thinking about coordinated sets of activities related to planning, computational modeling, design, construction, conservation, evaluation and research of transport infrastructure at its different levels: tactical, strategic and operational.

The objective of the line is to investigate and generate knowledge for the development of theories, techniques, methods and analytical models that allow understanding and offer integral solutions (structuring, design, construction, maintenance, operation and conservation) sustainable and adequately respond to problems related to transport and its infrastructures, to the mobility of people and goods, and to the implementation of logistics management systems at the urban territorial level, regional, national and international.

The National University of Colombia has identified, through the Transit and Transport Research Program, interdisciplinary institutional research projects with a high impact on the country’s mobility. In this sense, extension and research projects have been developed aimed at proposing solutions in small and intermediate cities through mobility and road safety plans in which different disciplines such as engineering interact, the economy, logistics, politics and jurisprudence.

In this way, groups such as PIT and the STyT research incubator have promoted the implementation of clean technologies in public transport systems, as well as non-motorized strategies to be developed and proposed as long-term solutions in centralised cities [[iii]] towards intelligent mobility. In this sense, the development of the research line in transport planning and infrastructure is considered relevant and necessary as part of the PhD program in Civil Engineering.

CV Assessment criteria

The evaluation of the applicant's curriculum vitae will be based on the documentation submitted during the admission process (curriculum vitae and supporting documents). Undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, professional and research experience, academic distinctions, publications and academic references will be taken into account for the maximum evaluation.

Exams Assessment Criteria

The aim of the preliminary research proposal for PhD in Engineering - Civil Engineering applicants is to identify their ability to formulate research projects. The proposal evaluates the criteria of quality, coherence, relevance, feasibility and impact.

Interview Assessment Criteria

In the interview, applicants will be asked about different aspects of their interest in the programme, as well as their chances of successfully completing the programme.

Proficiency of Foreign Language

Applicants for the Doctoral Programme in Engineering must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language (English). The sufficiency test is eliminatory, the applicant must demonstrate at least a B1 level of English, otherwise he will not be admitted.

At the time of registration via the internet (step 2), the applicant will be asked if he wants to approve the English proficiency test, he can select from the following options:

Be a graduate of an undergraduate program at the National University of Colombia.
If you are a graduate of a postgraduate program from the National University of Colombia and obtained a grade equal to or higher than 3.5 in the English exam presented in the admission process.
Achieve the level of sufficiency required by the University through the test applied by the National Admissions Directorate.
Present a foreign language certificate with a validity of less than two years. See Homologate proof of knowledge in English. To present the certificate you must deliver the original and current certificate, within the schedule established by the respective call during the registration period, to the National Admissions Directorate (Calle 44 No. 45-67, Bloque B3, Unidad Camilo Torres, Bogotá D.C., from Monday to Friday in continuous working day from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm); or send to the email qualifier@unal.edu.co a digital image of the original and current certificate, that is, with a date of submission not later than two years of the test being applied for. The duration of the certificate is counted with respect to the start date of the registration process.

Minimum admission mark

The minimum admission mark after weighting all the components of the entrance examination shall be 3.0 out of 5.0
